The 51st G7 Leaders' Summit Comes to Kananaskis June 15-17 

The 51st G7 Leaders’ Summit is set to convene at the Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, 2025,

The G7, or Group of Seven, is an annual informal gathering of political leaders from 7 of the largest economies in the world. It serves as a forum for these industrialized democracies to discuss, build consensus, and coordinate policies on global economic and political issues. The G7 has no charter, offices, or permanent administration. It makes decisions based on consensus, without formal votes, and it is not binding. It is organized by a presidency that rotates through the official members.

The summit was established in 1975 as G6 and comprised of France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The following year, Canada was added to make the G7, and since 1977, the European Union has been included but is not an official member. In 1998, Russia joined the group forming the G8 but in 2014 Russia was suspended after the annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

This year is Canada’s 17th time holding the presidency and Ottawa will be hosting the summit from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis. The agenda will include key topics such as international peace and security, climate change, building strong economies, and cyber security.

Attending the summit will be Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, France President Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni from Italy, Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, the United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and the United States President Donald Trump. The European Union will be represented by President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. Additionally, leaders from invited countries include Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Security measures will be extensive. There will be a controlled‑access zone from June 10 to 18, strengthened RCMP and military presence, airspace restrictions, and designated protest zones. Entry will be restricted to authorized personnel, residents and businesses of the area. Some trails, day-use areas and local businesses will be closed.
