The Alder Cafe & Grocery is owned and operated by John and Belinda Spear. Originally from England, the Spears moved to Canmore in 2000, where they started their family and embraced the mountains as home. In 2004, the Spears transformed a small-run, basement chocolate shop into the sweet staple of the Bow Valley: Le Chocolatier. After 18 years of spreading joy throughout the Bow Valley community through artisan chocolate confections, the Spears decided it was time to pursue their dream of opening Canmore’s first Groceraunt. It was important to them to have, “a shop that offered plenty of options,” said John Spear. “Pre-made meals, locally sourced products, high-quality cuts of meat, and a variety of everyday groceries- much like you would find in England.”

“We want to provide options that are not typically found in your everyday grocery store,” said Belinda Spear. “Our goal is to provide a unique and high-quality experience to the people of our community.”
