The Long Term Plan
The Town of Canmore and Town Council, with input from citizens, created a long term Integrated Transportation Plan in 2018.
The Transportation Plan target is to double the percent of summer day trips made by walking, cycling and transit, from 20% to 40% by 2030.
The shift to more walking (13% to 15%), cycling (5% to 20%) and transit (2% to 5%) by 2030, is designed to meet the forecast demand of continued growth in residents and visitors attracted to Canmore and our Rocky Mountains.
Some of the Town of Canmore initiatives, designed to meet the Transportation Plan target of 40% walking, cycling and transit trips by 2030, include:
- Redesign of key roads to allocate more & better space for walking, cycling & transit
- Expansion of Roam Transit service in Canmore and in the Bow Valley
- Free Roam Transit service in Canmore
- Parking management including pay parking areas and free remote parking areas
- Summer conversion of two blocks of 8 (Main) Street to pedestrians and cyclists only
- Lower speed limits in key areas
- More and better bicycle parking
- Better winter maintenance of walking and cycling routes
