Tartan Day in Canmore: Celebrating Scottish Heritage 

Tartan Day in Canmore is a celebration that honors the rich Scottish heritage and contributions to Canadian culture. Observed on April 6th each year, Tartan Day is an opportunity for Canadians to embrace and showcase their Scottish roots through various festivities, events, and displays of tartan, the traditional Scottish plaid fabric.

The name "Canmore" is believed to have originated from Malcolm III of Scotland, also known as Malcolm Canmore, who was a king of Scotland in the 11th century. The word "Canmore" itself doesn't have a specific meaning in English; rather, it is a Gaelic-derived name associated with the historical Scottish royalty.

In Gaelic, "Ceann Mór" (pronounced roughly as "Kyan More") means "Great Head" or "Big Head," which is thought to be the origin of the name "Canmore." It's worth noting that this Gaelic term doesn't refer to a physical head, but rather to a significant or prominent person, possibly reflecting Malcolm Canmore's stature as a king.

Scottish culture in Canmore permeates various aspects of daily life in the town. From the music played in local pubs, the haggis served, the tributes to Rabbie Burns, Tartan Day celebrations, and the ever-so-famous Canmore Highland Games, veins of Scottish influence run through the town.

This year we celebrate Tartan Day with a Pub Night and LIVE music & dancing with Cabots Crossing. There will be Highland Dancers, piping, raffles and a cash bar.
