The Last of Us~ An Easy 3.5 Km Walking Loop from Downtown Canmore 

This walk is named after the popular TV mini-series, The Last of Us, that first aired in early 2023. The Old Engine Bridge over the Bow River and Main Street Canmore were featured prominently in episode six of the series and can be found on this walk.

The Old Engine Bridge also played a critical role in delivering coal from the Canmore Coal Mine located west of the Bow River, to the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) mainline, located on the east side of the Bow River. The Canmore Coal Mine operated between 1891 and 1979. The old coal car rail line has been converted to today’s spur line multi-use trail and the Old Engine Bridge has been repurposed as a popular walking and cycling bridge.

From the Big Head, walk north along the Policeman’s Creek pathway crossing 10 Street until you see the small wood pedestrian bridge on your left crossing Policeman’s Creek. Turn west on the spur line trail and walk 0.7 km to the famous Old Engine Bridge over the Bow River.

From the Engine Bridge, look downstream for the iconic view of the Three Sisters and the Bow River. Look upstream to view the spectacular Mount Rundle Range, a series of towering peaks. The Town of Banff is located at the northwest end of Mount Rundle, approximately 20 km away, as the crow flies.

Continue past the Rundle Hydro Plant, then downstream to the road bridge over the Bow River.

Use the separate pedestrian bridge over the Bow River, another location for spectacular photos.

Once across the Bow River, turn back upstream, through Riverside Park. Cross the park and walk on River Road to Main Street, where many of The Last of Us scenes were filmed. Walk for four blocks along Main Street, explore, shop and dine at some of the outstanding businesses, then continue back to the Big Head.
