The Canmore Highland Games ~ August 31st & Sept. 1st 

The 33rd Annual Canmore Highland Games stand as a vibrant celebration of Scottish culture, athleticism, and tradition nestled in the picturesque Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada. With 2 full days of Celtic events, this could be the biggest and best Highland Games in western Canada!

One of the most anticipated aspects of the Canmore Highland Games is the traditional Highland athletics competitions, The Heavy Sports. Spectators are treated to awe-inspiring feats of strength as competitors participate in events such as the caber toss, hammer throw, and stone put. These ancient games, rooted in Scottish history, test the physical prowess and skill of the athletes while paying homage to the rugged traditions of the Highlands.

But the heavy sports are not the only athletic contests happening this weekend. Highland dancing, a centuries-old Scottish tradition, is a captivating display of precision, grace, and athleticism. Rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Scottish Highlands, this art form showcases intricate footwork, elegant arm movements, and vibrant costumes that pay homage to Scotland's history and folklore.

Highland dancing competitions, both solo and group, are a highlight of the Canmore Highland Games, where dancers from across Canada gather to showcase their talent and passion for this beloved tradition.

Saturday and Sunday, pipe & drum bands from near & far take to the field to compete in stirring musical performances that captivate audiences and evoke a sense of pride and nostalgia. The stirring sound of the bagpipes permeates the event and adds to its enchanting ambiance.

There is also a British Car Show, a sheep dog exhibition, a Celtic Market, a Clan Village, a drum major clinic, highland cattle, and a beer garden, spread across the festival grounds. Meet the Clans and shop the market for specialized Celtic products. Find piping and drumming supplies, highland attire, art, jewellery, gifts, novelties, and delicious food. Quench your thirst at the beer garden where there will be LIVE Celtic music all weekend long.

This is a weekend full of fun, with the warm-up happening Saturday, Aug. 31st. There will be dance exhibitions, music, and sport starting at 9:00am. Then join us at the Taste of the Highlands. Enjoy an evening of wines and whisky’s, meads and ale with local and international beverages and brews from some of the world’s most celebrated producers. There will be experts available to share their knowledge as you sip your way from booth to booth. Appetizers will be served up by some of Canmore’s finest restaurants.

Sunday, Sept. 1st, the Canmore Highland Games, is busy with a diverse array of cultural experiences offering something for everyone. And the Canmore Ceilidh, (said “kay·lee”) is the kitchen party that brings us together under the tent for dinner and some dancing. This year the band, Rollin Drones is coming straight from Scotland!
